Katherine Pettit was born in Fayette County, Kentucky and attended the Sayre School in Lexington from 1885 to 1887. In 1902 she established the Hindman Settlement School in Knott County, Kentucky with her colleague, May Stone. In 1913 Pettit founded the Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County. This collection includes correspondence of Katherine Pettit from the Hindman Settlement School, and a commonplace book kept by Pettit which contain her observations and other information about the Hindman and Pine Mountain schools. The book also includes notes on Appalachian quotations and figures of speech
