Biography/History

W.P.D. Haly was born William Purcell Dennis Haly in Frankfort circa 1874, the son of Irish Catholic immigrants. He rose to political power and prominence and was associated with Governor Beckham. Beckham named Haly Adjutant General in 1903. Haly was also influential in national politics, connected particularly with the campaigns and administrations of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. One of his obituaries stated he took an active part in every Democratic campaign from 1896 to his death. In later years Haly was an associate of the Bingham family and their newspaper, the LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL and worked with Louisville city government. His death in 1937 was attributed to pneumonia brought on by fatigue from his work as assistant provost marshal for the city's emergency relief organization responding to the Ohio River flood that year.
