THE NEWS-ENTERPRISE SCHOOLS C7 MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2012 N ORTH MIDDLE NORTH HARDIN Thacker gets scholarship to UK Somang Lee-Thacker, a senior drum major at North Hardin High School has received a University of Kentucky School of Music scholarship. As first chair flute in the North Hardin Wind Symphony, she also was selected for the 2011 Governor’s School for the Arts, chosen for the elite 2012 KMEA All-State Symphonic Band and a member of the 2012 UK High School Honors Wind Ensemble. Somang is a member of the National Honor Society. North Middle Students join JOOI Fifty-two North Middle School Junior Leadership Corps students were inducted into the new North Hardin Junior Optimist Octagon International club by the Optimist Lt. Governor of the Kentucky/West Virginia District, Willie Lee. Mrs. McGray attended the ceremony with Mae Knight, president of the Optimist Club of Radcliff. ELIZABETHTOWN HARDIN-L ARUE RETIRED TE ACHERS ASSOCIATION NHHS students perform musical North Hardin High School choir students, under the direction of Mrs. Beth Root, recently performed their 2012 musical “Alice” at the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center. The musical was inspired by readings of the original storybook tale by Lewis Caroll and then took on a modern twist. Chloe Childress wins EHLRTA Grandparent Essay Contest Chloe Childress, a fifth-grader at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Hodgenville, is the winner of the Elizabethtown Hardin-LaRue Retired Teachers’ Grandparent Essay Contest. Chloe read her essay, “The Best Grandma,” explaining why her grandmother, Shirley Childress, should be the AARP/KRTA Grandparent of the Year at the March meeting. Chloe’s essay will be sent to state competition as the district winner. Chloe received a certificate, medal and gift card to Barnes & Noble. Her teacher, Karlotta Cecil, received a gift certificate to Kentucky School Service. Besides her teacher and grandmother, Chloe was accompanied by her parents J.J. and Bonnie Childress, and her grandfather, James Childress. ELIZABETHTOWN COMMUNIT Y AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE ECTC to offer ACT prep classes Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will offer ACT prep courses in April. Individual classes are structured to give attention to each of the four subject areas – English, math, reading and science – or students may choose to take the ACT overview, offering customdesigned tutoring and practical advice on all four subjects. The ACT scores received on the exam can play an important role in admission to a college or university. While admission criteria vary, it is important to do well on the exam. Upcoming ACT preparation courses will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on the following dates: Overview – April 5 Math – April 9 English – April 11 Science – April 12 Reading – April 13 All ACT prep course are $39 each.
